Looking for ways to reduce spending?

In today’s economy, many homeowners are looking for ways to reduce spending.  One way to do so is by reviewing their homeowner’s insurance policy.  Raising the deductible from $500 to $1,000, reducing coverage on the “household contents” portion of the policy, and installing home security devices could save as much as 25 percent every month on premiums, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

As we enter the New Year, what remodeling projects would give the best return on an investment?

A: Let’s look at what the experts say. According to a recent survey by Remodeling Magazine, the top big-impact, low-cost projects include:

  • Tidy up the insides of your kitchen cabinets to make them appear roomier, add or replace tile on counters and backsplashes, and add a breakfast bar. You can even replace the cabinet doors and drawer fronts for $4,000 to $10,000 in an average size kitchen.
  • In the bathroom, add a new medicine cabinet, light fixtures and faucet. Install new glass shower doors if they are dated.
  • Replace light fixtures in the entry hall and other major rooms. New overhead lighting can provide a lot of “pop” for little money.
  • Consider painting the your garage floor with floor paint. Also, make sure it is clean before showing. No one wants to be in a room with air that’s stale or damp.
  • If your garage is at the front of your house, you may want to consider replacing an older door with a new one. Garage doors are available lots of places. Even Costco sells them now.

Remember, the way you sell a home may not be the way one lives in the home. Every organized home I see makes me impressed and leaves a positive impression.

The forecast is for 6 to 7 inches of rain in the Bay Area...

...next (this) week and at least 7 feet of new snow in the high Sierra through Wednesday, with more coming later in the week. National Weather Service forecasters say the storms could rival in intensity the deluge that hit in January and February of 1998. The pounding could be as bad as the El Niño gully washer in January 1995 that caused the Russian River to overflow, reaching its second highest crest in history, according to Pechner.

home improvement reimbursements

  • The government is expected to unveil a new program in the next couple of months that, if approved, may reimburse homeowners for up to half the cost of making their homes more efficient.  Through the program, homeowners will receive the largest return from simple upgrades like caulking windows, adding insulation, and changing incandescent light bulbs to those that are more energy-efficient.

  • To determine which energy-efficiency upgrades are best for their house, homeowners should obtain a home energy audit.   Homeowners are advised to hire a contractor licensed by the Building Performance Institute or the Residential Energy Services Network.  These contractors have been trained to first test a home to determine the amount of energy it is losing, then make suggestions on renovation.

Green tip for the week and fast fact re: #realestate

Recycled paint
What happens to all the latex paint that is dropped off at hazard waste centers? It’s recycled and is being resold at your local paint distributors, Dunn-Edwards and Kelly-Moore, for instance. Recycled paint sells for less, but the quality and viscosity is augmented by blending it with virgin materials.
